Xabi Alonso has spoken fondly of his time playing for Liverpool and revealed why he has the upmost respect for our fans.
However, 18 months at the Bernabeu has not dimmed his memories of the Kop.
"To play for Liverpool is something very special," he told the Spanish edition of Vogue magazine.
"There is a very intimate connection between the fans and players that doesn't exist at other clubs.
"Even in bad times, the stands do not whistle. Instead they sing You'll Never Walk Alone."
The 29-year-old's wife Nagore echoed her husband's sentiments.
She had their first child Jontxu on Merseyside in 2008 after sacrificing a successful career in Spain four years previous.
"It was the best move I made (coming to Liverpool)," said Nagore.
"The relationship went a step further. I had been working on a film production team (at the time), but I packed my bags and went."
Alonso scored 19 goals in 210 appearances for Liverpool, including two from the half-way line which helped turn him into a player idolised on the Kop.
He has returned to watch his former team at Anfield several times since, as well as sending good luck messages to the likes of Jamie Carragher and Kenny Dalglish on Twitter.
